Deborah Conway: Sunday September 9th 2001I’ve been in Adelaide all week playing across the road at Her Majesty’s. It’s an old theatre which promises some thrillingly ornamental proscenium arch from the outside but once inside could be best described as serviceable. I think it was “done up” in the eighties but maybe left unfinished. It also has an unfortunate seat layout whereby anyone sitting in the side seats can’t see the edges of the stage on their side. This was realised when during the opening of the second half, the “Curvaceous Bobettes” trawl around the crowd doing that mingling thing and cosy comments like “y’all havin’ a good time?” were met with “who the fuck’s asking” type looks. Nevertheless the punters are among the most enthusiastic we’ve played to jumping out of their seats at the curtain calls for a stomping standing ovation. We even had a few hillbillies in the front rows last night who insisted on clapping through every number, shame it was out of time, but they sure as hell got their money’s worth. I feel like I’m only just beginning to get my head around this gig and I still got so much work to do. Last night we started cooking up there like a real band. It makes sense I guess, I’ve been Deborah Conway for 20 years and Patsy Cline for just over 20 performances, a regular green horn, anyway I got til December 16th to get it right. Not so long in the scheme of things but added Sunday, 9 September, 2001
